Use tape to gauge the depth of holes.

To determine the depth of holes using tape, you will need masking tape and a drill bit or machine. Take a long strip of masking tape and wrap it around the drill bit. Make sure to leave room for the drill bit to actually penetrate the material. Ensure the masking tape wrapped around the drill bit is thick enough so you’ll notice when it makes contact with the material. After you’ve drilled the hole, measure the distance from the end of the drill to where the masking tape starts.
